Prestigious 2010 fib Award goes to Navia Viaduct

Environment friendly construction method convinced the jury

The Navia Viaduct in Asturias, Spain, with its two striking arches has been recently honored by fib as an outstanding concrete structure in the civil engineering category. The 905 m long landmark structure is situated in ecologically sensitive marshland, thus an innovative design and bridge construction method was required to minimize environmental impact. Prestressing work was carried out by Spanish BBR Network Member, BBR PTE, including installation of internal and external CONA post-tensioning systems for the deck, as well as BBR stay cables to support both 160 m long central spans. The precast segments were placed with the cantilevering and advanced shoring methods.
